And Fasting

Fasting is about a supercharged prayer life, increased awareness of God, and desire to put Him first above all things.

For 21 days, during the month of January, we’re asking our church to lean into fasting together. Each of us will decide what we want our fasting (frequency and type) to look like. We recommend one of the following lanes:

Food Fast

This fast involves limiting or abstaining from food for a set period of time. Some may choose a selective fast (removing certain food types), a partial fast (abstaining from food during specific hours of the day), or a complete fast (consuming only water and zero calorie beverages). Participants should choose an approach that is wise, sustainable, and appropriate for their health.

Media Fast

This fast involves intentionally limiting or removing media and screen use, such as social media, television, streaming services, news, or entertainment. A media fast is designed to reduce noise and distraction by stepping away from habitual digital input for the duration of the fast, then reintroducing it thoughtfully afterward.

Comfort Fast

This fast involves temporarily giving up a regular comfort, indulgence, or vice. Examples may include sweets, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, shopping, unnecessary spending, or other habitual comforts. In some cases, it may also involve choosing a less comfortable option: taking the stairs, parking furthest away, or sleeping on the floor - in order to create space for attentiveness and dependence.

Frequency & Duration

As you consider how to participate in our 21 days of fasting, think in terms of both frequency and duration. Some may choose to fast for part of the day - from the time they wake up until mid-afternoon (around 3:00 pm) and perhaps only doing this 2-3 days of the week.

Others may fast one or two full days each week, and others may commit to fasting for a shorter portion of the 21 days. You might fast the full three weeks in a consistent way, or select specific days that allow you to remain prayerful and present. A complete fast for all 21 days is not encouraged, and fasting should always be practiced wisely with attention to health. The goal is not intensity, but faithfulness—choosing a pattern that is sustainable and helps you stay attentive to God throughout the season.
