Breath Prayer
Week 2 – Pray Continually
Practicing prayer throughout the day
Prayer Practice: Breath Prayer
Day 8, Sunday, January 11
“Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.”
—Psalm 150:6
Prayer is not meant to be limited to one place or one time of day. Scripture invites us to pray continually—not by speaking nonstop, but by learning to remain aware of God’s presence throughout ordinary moments. Breath prayer is can be a tool for increasing our sensitivity and awareness of God’s present reality in our midst.
This practice is especially helpful when we feel rushed, anxious, distracted, or unsure what to say. It’s less about scheduled time with the Lord and more about finding and sharing simple moments in the gaps of life.
How to Practice
When Christians practice breath prayer, it typically looks like sharing a short, repeated phrase broken into two parts. As you breath in, you quietly pray the first half of the phrase and as you breathe out, you quietly pray the second half of the phrase. This is usually repeated several times. Our suggestion? Choose one breath prayer to remember and pray throughout the day.
Examples:
Breathe in: The Lord is my Shepherd. Breathe Out: I shall not want.
Breathe in: Nothing Can Separate Me. Breathe Out: From the Love of God.
Breathe in: Your Grace. Breathe Out: Is Sufficient For Me.
Breathe in: I Fear No Evil. Breathe Out: For You Are With Me.
Breathe in: Thy Kingdom Come. Breathe Out: Thy Will Be Done.
Gentle Reminder
Breath prayer is not about clearing your mind, but gently returning it to God. Even a single breath offered in prayer is enough. Over time, see how these small moments and reminders of God’s presence can shape your heart and mind.
