Prayer Practice: Consecrate the Ordinary

Day 12, Thursday, January 15

“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” —1 Corinthians 10:31

Prayer is not only something we say—it’s something we live. Scripture reminds us that even the most ordinary actions can be offered to God. Eating, drinking, working, resting—none of these need to be spiritually neutral. All of life can become an act of worship.

Praying for God’s glory throughout the day helps us reframe everyday moments. Instead of asking, “Is this spiritual or is this secular?” we begin asking, “Can this be offered to God?” All of the sudden, every simple, mundane, ordinary act can be “set apart” as an act of worship unto the Lord.

How to Practice

As you move through your day, intentionally offer ordinary actions to God.

Before you begin a task—large or small—pause briefly and acknowledge Him.

You might pray:

  • “Lord, I offer this to You.”

  • “May this bring You glory.”

  • “Help me honor You in this.”

This can be practiced:

  • Before a meal

  • At the start of work

  • During chores or errands

  • In conversations

  • While resting

You most likely don’t need to change what you’re doing. Simply change who you’re doing it for and how you’re experiencing it.

Take a simple act like sweeping the floor:
“God, I wouldn’t have this floor to sweep if it weren’t for Your provision. I wouldn’t have the health to do it if it weren’t for Your sustaining grace. All that I have is Yours. I’m simply called to steward it. As I sweep, I don’t sweep only for myself or even for my family—I choose to serve the Lord in my sweeping, to do it as if these floors belonged to Jesus Himself… because in the end, they do.”

Gentle Reminder

Living for God’s glory doesn’t mean every moment feels holy but when we offer ordinary life to God, every moment can be made holy and used to bring glory to Him - whether we eat or drink, or whatever we do.
